EKO HOT BLOG reports that fresh from a 2-1 win over Ghana and a penalty shootout triumph over Jamaica in the Unity Cup final, the Super Eagles were looking to build on their recent momentum. However, they faced early setbacks against the Russians.
The deadlock was broken in the 27th minute when Nigeria’s Semi Ajayi inadvertently turned a dangerous Russian cross into his own net. The own goal briefly disrupted Nigeria’s rhythm, despite early dominance in possession and attacking efforts from Victor Boniface, Chidera Uche, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
Coach Chelle responded with tactical changes after the break. The introduction of Tolu Arokodare in the 61st minute proved decisive.
Just ten minutes after coming on, Arokodare delivered a towering header in the 71st minute to restore parity, finishing off a well-placed cross and keeping Nigeria firmly in the contest.
As the match wore on, tempers flared. Nigeria’s Bruno Onyemaechi was booked in the 55th minute, while Russia’s Daniil Glebov and Aleksei Batrakov received yellow cards later in the second half. Despite pressure from the Russians late in the game, Nigeria stood firm to secure a respectable draw.

The result marks a continued positive trajectory under Chelle, with Nigeria now unbeaten in three consecutive games. The team’s fighting spirit and tactical maturity were on full display as they prepare for tougher tests ahead.
