EKO HOT BLOG reports that The tightly contested encounter saw both Nigeria and Portugal create several scoring opportunities, but neither side was able to find the back of the net. The Super Falcons notably stepped up their performance in the second half after introducing more experienced players and came close to securing a late winner, but the game eventually ended without goals.
The result is seen as a positive outing for both teams as they fine-tune their strategies ahead of their next big tournaments—Nigeria for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and Portugal for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.
Meanwhile, Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has shed light on the exclusion of in-form striker Monday Gift from Nigeria’s final 24-player squad for WAFCON.
Gift, who recently signed for Washington Spirit in the United States National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), has been in remarkable form, scoring four goals and providing an assist in just nine games. Her omission surprised many fans.
Addressing the decision in Abuja, Madugu explained that it was a difficult but unavoidable choice, citing player limits set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“These players are all national assets. Leaving anyone out is painful,” Madugu said. “CAF regulations restrict the squad size, and after carefully analyzing all positions, we had to make tough calls. Gift wasn’t the only player we wished we could take.”

The Super Falcons will now shift focus to their next friendly match against Ghana’s Black Queens on Friday as part of their final build-up to the WAFCON tournament.
