3 students were shot dead at Oxford High School, 6 injured
EKO HOT BLOG reports that three students were killed and six other people wounded when a 15-year-old boy allegedly opened fire Tuesday at Oxford High School.
Of the injured victims, five are students and one is a teacher, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
The alleged shooter, an Oxford High School sophomore, is in custody and a handgun has been recovered, the sheriff’s office said.
Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe said the shooting lasted five minutes and the teen suspect surrendered to sheriff’s deputies after firing at least 15 rounds. Authorities don’t suspect any other shooters were involved.
McCabe declined to discuss any preliminary conversation authorities have had with the teen suspect, and said that he requested an attorney. McCabe also said numerous detectives will be interviewing students and combing through social media as they investigate what led up to the incident.
Police and fire personnel from several agencies, EMS units, SWAT and the sheriff’s aviation unit responded to the scene, which unfolded at around 12:50 p.m. More than 100 people called 9-1-1 to report the shooting.
Students were evacuated to the Meijer store in Oxford, just north of the downtown, which closed down to shoppers so the students could be picked up by parents or other relatives. Parents were advised to not go to the school.
Information on the victims’ conditions was not released, nor were their names.
Oxford Community Schools Superintendent Tim Throne is expected to announce Tuesday evening when Oxford High School will reopen.
