President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, as part of efforts to strengthen technical education and unlock Nigeria’s solid minerals potential.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the approval, announced in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, aligns with the administration’s commitment to developing human capital and supporting industrialisation through specialised tertiary education.

According to the Presidency, the decision followed a proposal by Senator Wadada Aliyu, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District, advocating the establishment of a specialised institution to harness Nasarawa State’s comparative advantage in the solid minerals sector.
The new university is expected to provide world class education, research and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing and emerging technologies.
It will also train the skilled workforce required to drive value addition, technological advancement and the sustainable exploitation of Nigeria’s mineral resources.

The Presidency said the approval reflects Tinubu’s commitment to aligning the nation’s tertiary education system with national development priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda by establishing specialised institutions that address key economic needs.
The President has directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant agencies to begin the processes required to implement the conversion in line with existing laws and regulations.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in education as a strategic tool for economic growth, innovation, job creation and national prosperity.
