The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has uncovered over 6,000 Nigeriens illegally registered in Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database.
Following the discovery, President Bola Tinubu has ordered an inter-ministerial committee to clean up the database and ensure accurate records for the National Social Register, which is crucial for government social investment programs.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who oversees NIMC, briefed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on the matter, confirming that the fraudulent registrations had been erased. The minister also assured that NIMC is tightening its processes to prevent further identity fraud, especially in border communities.
Past investigations revealed that non-Nigerians, particularly from neighboring countries, had exploited loopholes to acquire NINs illegally, sometimes with the help of corrupt officials. Security operatives have previously intercepted fake NIMC agents attempting to register foreigners in IDP camps.
The NIN system is designed to provide a unique identification for citizens and legal residents, linking biometric and demographic data for secure identity verification. However, its integrity has been compromised by fraudulent activities.
A source in the Presidency stated that Tinubu wants the database streamlined to ensure that only eligible Nigerians benefit from programs such as student loans and conditional cash transfers. “The President doesn’t want money going to people who cannot be identified,” the source added.
As part of the clean-up, Tinubu has directed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Interior to join an existing presidential panel overseeing the humanitarian ministry. The committee will work to verify identities and eliminate fictitious beneficiaries from the National Social Register.

NIMC’s Director-General, Bisoye Coker-Odusote, emphasized that linking NINs to social welfare payments will enhance transparency. “This ensures that only real beneficiaries receive support, preventing ghost enrollments,” she said.
Security experts, however, warn that unless the government strengthens border controls, unauthorized access to national identity credentials will persist.
