In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Ayenigba, the opposition party described the allegations as reckless and misleading propaganda pushed by individuals with personal and political motives.
“The national leadership of our great party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has in the past days been inundated with calls and expressions of concern about the reckless and mischievous statements credited to some individuals, suggesting that President Bola Tinubu owns and funds the SDP,” the statement read.
Ayenigba further noted that while the party initially chose to ignore the allegations to avoid lending them credibility, it decided to address them due to widespread concerns from patriotic Nigerians.
Reaffirming the party’s autonomy, the SDP emphasized that it operates based on its constitution and people-centered ideology, with no allegiance to any single individual or political figure.
Tinubu SDP Reveals True Owners
The party acknowledged Tinubu’s historical ties to the SDP, recalling that the platform played a role in launching his political career during the aborted Third Republic when he won a Senate seat for Lagos West. However, it insisted that there is no ongoing political affiliation or collaboration between Tinubu and the party.
“The SDP has, over the years, been solely self-funded and sustained through the subscriptions and sacrifices of members across the country,” the statement concluded.
