Bwala noted that the trip, made at the invitation of the Turkish government, underscores Nigeria’s growing diplomatic influence under President Tinubu. He highlighted the President’s previous role as ECOWAS Chairman and Nigeria’s strategic importance in Africa as key factors shaping the visit.
“This is not just another trip. It is a strategic visit, first because it is by invitation of the Turkish government. The President of Nigeria is a person of influence in Africa, and Nigeria itself plays a strong role on the continent. With the breakthroughs we are recording in the economy, security and governance, this visit carries significant weight,” he said.
The formal programme began on Tuesday and includes a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Türkiye. Several Nigerian ministers accompanying the President are expected to hold bilateral discussions with their Turkish counterparts on defence, security cooperation, and economic development.

Bwala further noted that the visit builds on Nigeria’s renewed international standing, citing recent diplomatic engagements with the United Arab Emirates and a re-engagement with global partners, including the United States.
Highlighting Türkiye’s capabilities in defence manufacturing and security technology, he said the visit aligns with Nigeria’s current security priorities, while acknowledging the country’s historical contributions to bilateral relations.
Describing the visit as “a meeting of shared interests,” Bwala added that Turkish officials and citizens have shown enthusiasm since President Tinubu’s arrival. Specific agreements and outcomes are expected to be released publicly at the conclusion of the visit, reinforcing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, deepening defence cooperation, and opening new economic opportunities.
