Borussia Dortmund have initiated discussions with Chelsea to sign defender Renato Veiga on an initial loan deal.
Chelsea, however, would prefer a permanent transfer for the 21-year-old Portugal international. An arrangement including an obligation to buy at the end of the loan could potentially meet Chelsea’s terms.

The Blues have not been receptive to Dortmund’s approach and earlier this month rejected a loan bid from Wolves. Veiga remains a key part of Enzo Maresca’s squad, regularly featuring in cup competitions, including Saturday’s dominant 5-0 victory over Morecambe in the FA Cup third round.
Despite his involvement, Veiga is reportedly open to exploring his options.
He is keen to play in a more central role, having been deployed primarily as a left-back to cover for regular starter Marc Cucurella.
Veiga joined Chelsea from FC Basel in the summer for £12 million. Manager Enzo Maresca has previously expressed his trust in Veiga but benched him for a home match against Fulham in December due to a “technical decision.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea are looking to offload Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Cesare Casadei during the January transfer window.
Maresca has denied rumours that Veiga, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Axel Disasi are being pushed out, despite ongoing interest from other clubs.
