Nigeria’s passport has been ranked 94th out of 199 countries in the latest Henley Passport Index, allowing visa-free access to only 46 destinations.

This ranking shows the challenges Nigerians face when traveling abroad due to limited visa-free opportunities.

The Henley Passport Index, which evaluates passports based on their visa-free travel access, placed Nigeria alongside countries like Ethiopia, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At the top of the list, Singapore holds the most powerful passport, granting visa-free access to 195 destinations, followed by Japan with 193. European countries such as France, Germany, and Italy share the third spot with 192 destinations. Meanwhile, Afghanistan ranked the lowest, offering its citizens very few travel options.

The report noted that countries like the United Arab Emirates have improved their rankings through strong diplomatic efforts, while nations like Nigeria need to work harder to improve their citizens’ global mobility.

Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, who created the passport index, emphasized the growing need for countries to rethink citizenship policies. He suggested that free global cities could help migrants and displaced people rebuild their lives and contribute to society.
