- Truck Crushes Police Officer and Passenger in Lagos
- Container truck lost control beneath Ijora Bridge
- Two others seriously injured, emergency services on scene
A tragic accident in Lagos saw a police officer and a female passenger crushed to death by a 40-foot container truck.
According to Eko Hot Blog, the articulated truck (registered XP 368 AKD) slipped while making a dangerous manoeuvre under the Ijora Bridge and overturned onto a commercial tricycle marked KJA 364 QN. The incident happened at Ijora Causeway, inward Ijora 7Up. Vanguard reports that the truck fell onto the tricycle, which had four passengers.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that two people died instantly: a serving police officer and a female passenger. The tricycle operator and another passenger escaped with serious leg injuries. Emergency responders, including LASTMA, the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and police officers, quickly moved the injured to Jimsan Hospital, Gasikiya, Ijora.
Speaking further on the event, Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, said that salvage operations were hampered initially by angry crowd reaction. Residents attempted to set the truck ablaze, but security operatives from the Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri divisions intervened.
The remains of the police officer were taken to Yaba Mortuary, while the female victim’s body was retrieved by relatives at the crash scene. Authorities have called for increased caution for drivers of heavy trucks, especially near bridges and road sections with high traffic. LASTMA also reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing safer driving standards and stricter route monitoring.
This incident adds to a growing concern over traffic safety in Lagos, especially involving large vehicles and tricycles. Advocates say that factors such as dangerous driving, lack of visibility under bridges, overloading, and poorly maintained roads often contribute to such fatalities.
As investigations continue, the public waits for answers about what exactly led the driver to lose control whether mechanical failure, brake issues, or driver error. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgency of road safety enforcement and infrastructure oversight in the city.
