In the latest move by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk targeting the federal workforce, government employees began receiving emails on Saturday demanding they justify their work over the past week. Musk warned that “failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”
The emails, sent from the Office of Personnel Management’s (OPM) HR address, instructed employees to provide five bullet points summarizing their accomplishments while copying their managers. The message explicitly prohibited sharing classified information, links, or attachments. Despite its authoritative tone, the email carried no official signature.

Subject-lined “What did you do last week?”, the message reached multiple federal agencies, often marked with high priority or red exclamation symbols.
Musk’s directive came just hours after a social media post where he echoed Trump’s calls for a more aggressive approach toward government employees.

“Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week,” Musk posted on X.
While the email itself did not explicitly state that noncompliance would result in termination, it imposed a strict deadline of Monday at 11:59 p.m. ET.

The move has sparked widespread anxiety among federal employees, who are already grappling with an onslaught of workforce shake-ups—including mass firings of probationary staff, controversial resignation requests, and enforced full-time office returns.
A union chapter president reported receiving “nonstop” messages from concerned employees following Musk’s post and the OPM email.
“I have no idea what this email actually means,” the union official said, advising members to “stand by” for further guidance.
