US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to begin dismantling the Department of Education, fulfilling a key campaign promise and a long-standing goal of many conservatives.

Calling the agency’s record “a series of breathtaking failures,” Trump vowed to return its funding and authority to individual states. “We’re going to shut it down as quickly as possible,” he said during a White House event, though officials acknowledged that a complete closure would require Congressional approval.

Legal challenges are already underway to block both the department’s closure and sweeping staff cuts announced last week.

Speaking before schoolchildren at desks inside the White House, Trump criticized the US education system, stating, “The US spends more on education than any other nation, yet our students are near the bottom globally.”

The executive order signals an intent to shrink the department’s role within the bounds of existing law, though critics note that like other Trump-era efforts to downsize federal agencies, the order will face strong legal scrutiny.

At the signing ceremony, Trump praised Linda McMahon, whom he appointed as Education Secretary, expressing hope she would be the last to hold the role. He added that he would find “something else” for her within his administration.

Following the order, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana announced he would introduce legislation to officially close the department. However, with Republicans holding a narrow 53-47 majority in the Senate and needing 60 votes for such action, the proposal faces significant hurdles.

Even if the department isn’t formally abolished, the Trump administration could significantly slash its funding and workforce—an approach it has already taken with the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which halted many of its programs following major budget cuts.
