The Trump administration filed a lawsuit against New York on Wednesday, accusing the state of obstructing federal efforts to combat undocumented immigration.
This legal action follows a similar move against Illinois last week, marking a renewed push by the president’s administration to crack down on sanctuary states and cities.

Speaking at a press conference, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi claimed that New York had chosen to prioritize undocumented migrants over American citizens, urging the state to comply with federal law.
“We sued Illinois, and New York didn’t listen,” Bondi said, adding, “If you don’t comply with federal law, we will hold you accountable. And if you are a state not complying with federal law, you’re next.”
The lawsuit targets New York’s sanctuary policies, which limit cooperation between state and federal authorities on immigration matters. One major point of contention is the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles, which Bondi criticized for its “tipoff provision” that alerts undocumented immigrants when federal authorities request their information. She argued that this practice is unconstitutional and undermines the ability of law enforcement to perform their duties effectively.

Bondi also cited specific law enforcement challenges, such as when officers are unable to check the immigration status of motorists they stop for traffic violations. “If they pull over someone and don’t have access to their background, they have no idea who they’re dealing with,” Bondi said.
The lawsuit comes as President Donald Trump intensifies his focus on immigration enforcement during his 2024 campaign, where he has pledged to carry out the largest mass deportation of undocumented migrants in U.S. history.
Trump has repeatedly criticized sanctuary cities for providing safe havens to immigrants, claiming they contribute to crime and pose a national security threat.
During the press conference, Bondi was accompanied by a mother whose 20-year-old daughter was allegedly murdered by an MS-13 gang member who, according to Bondi, should not have been allowed into the country.
“No other parents should suffer by having their child murdered by somebody that shouldn’t be here,” Bondi said.

Despite research showing that U.S. citizens commit more crimes per capita than undocumented immigrants, the Trump administration continues to assert that illegal immigration fuels violence and crime in American communities.
The lawsuit is the latest chapter in the ongoing battle between the federal government and states that adopt sanctuary policies, most of which are led by Democratic officials.
