The United States government, in a significant policy update, has announced changes to its non-immigrant visa rules for Nigerian nationals.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday, most non-diplomatic, non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerians will now be limited to single entry, with a validity period of just three months. The new directive takes effect immediately.

However, visas issued before July 8, 2025, will continue to be honoured under the terms in which they were originally granted.
The embassy explained that the move is part of the U.S. Department of State’s global visa reciprocity framework, a dynamic, ongoing process that regularly assesses and adjusts visa policies to ensure fairness and security.
These periodic changes may involve revisions in the number of permitted entries or the duration of validity.

The U.S. government emphasized that the update is designed to uphold the integrity of its immigration system. According to the embassy, American visa standards are built on internationally recognized technical and security benchmarks.
To that end, the U.S. Mission is actively collaborating with Nigerian authorities to meet these standards. Key areas of focus include the issuance of secure travel documents with verified identities, effective management of visa overstays, and the timely exchange of security or criminal data to enhance public safety.
Despite the new restrictions, the embassy reiterated that its diplomatic ties with Nigeria remain strong and unchanged.
Nigerian travellers are advised to strictly adhere to the terms of their visas and ensure that all travel documents are authentic, accurate, and up to date.

In closing, the United States reaffirmed its enduring commitment to Nigeria, highlighting the importance of people-to-people connections through trade, education, and cultural engagement.
“The United States remains a committed partner in deepening ties with the Nigerian people,” the embassy stated. “We look forward to continued cooperation with the Nigerian government and citizens alike, to ensure safe, legal, and secure travel between our two nations.”
