Rubio’s visit, scheduled for Wednesday, comes amid rising diplomatic tensions and an escalating trade war between the United States and its closest allies. The two-day summit at La Malbaie will bring together foreign ministers from the G7 nations, marking the first such meeting since Trump’s return to power under his ‘America First’ agenda.

Speaking to reporters while en route to the summit, Rubio dismissed concerns over Trump’s repeated statements about annexing Canada as the 51st U.S. state.

“We’re going to be focused in G7 on all of those things. That’s what the meeting is about,” Rubio stated. “It is not a meeting about how we’re going to take over Canada.”

The G7, which includes the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, was established to coordinate responses from leading democracies on pressing global issues. Key topics on this year’s agenda include the Ukraine crisis, conflicts in Sudan and the Middle East, and growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific region as China expands its influence.

Despite Rubio’s attempts to shift focus, Trump’s erratic foreign policy continues to strain relationships with key U.S. allies. On Wednesday, European nations intensified a tit-for-tat trade war following Trump’s sweeping tariffs on American steel and aluminum imports.

Canada, in particular, has been at the center of the conflict. In response to U.S. trade policies, Ottawa announced billions of dollars in retaliatory tariffs, further deepening the rift between the two nations.

Public sentiment in Canada has also turned sharply against the U.S. In recent weeks, Canadian hockey fans have booed the U.S. national anthem during games against American teams, while stores have begun pulling U.S.-made bourbon whiskeys off their shelves as part of a growing boycott movement.

Trump Canada G7 Summit

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom Trump has mocked as a mere “governor,” has led a strong counteroffensive against U.S. trade policies. Calling Trump’s tariffs “dumb,” Trudeau has rallied domestic and international support through his ‘Team Canada’ strategy to resist what he views as economic aggression from Washington.

Meanwhile, Trump doubled down on his inflammatory rhetoric, again suggesting Canada should become part of the U.S. “The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty-First State,” he wrote on social media Tuesday.

As tensions mount, Rubio’s diplomatic visit is unlikely to ease concerns among America’s closest allies.
