- Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under fire after it emerged that former UK Ambassador to the U.S., Peter Mandelson, had failed security vetting prior to his appointment, a fact the PM claims he was never told.
- Downing Street has sacked the Foreign Office’s top civil servant, Olly Robbins, but critics argue the scandal exposes a lack of grip on government operations.
- Starmer has promised to “set out the relevant facts” to Parliament on Monday as opposition leaders Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage accuse him of “blatant dishonesty.”
The government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been plunged into a deep political crisis following revelations that his former hand-picked envoy to Washington, Peter Mandelson, failed national security vetting.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the scandal has reignited demands for Starmer’s resignation, just weeks before crucial local and regional elections across the UK.

Speaking from France during talks on the ongoing Iran crisis, a visibly angry Starmer described the failure to inform him of the vetting results as “unforgivable,” especially since he had previously reassured Parliament that all due processes were strictly followed.
The Mandelson Saga
Peter Mandelson, a veteran Labour figure, was forced to resign as Ambassador in September 2025 after his historical ties to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were made public.

However, the crisis escalated Thursday when it was revealed that the Foreign Office Vetting Unit had actually flagged Mandelson as a security risk before he took the job in 2024.
A leaked letter from January 2024 had previously suggested Mandelson’s clearance was valid until 2030, leading to accusations that either the Prime Minister was kept in the dark by his own staff or that Parliament was knowingly misled.
Internal Turmoil and Sacking
As the “Mandelson gift that keeps on giving” threatens the Labour majority, Downing Street moved late Thursday to sack Olly Robbins, the Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office.
While some Labour lawmakers defend Starmer, citing the immense pressure of managing the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict, others have called for Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy to step down, citing “incompetence over deceit.”
Opposition Response
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch described Starmer’s “I didn’t know” defense as “preposterous,” while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage labeled the situation a display of “blatant dishonesty.”
The scandal comes at a sensitive time for Starmer, who could face a leadership challenge if 20% of his 404 Labour MPs (81 lawmakers) withdraw their support.
As Mandelson remains under police investigation for allegedly leaking government documents, the British public awaits Starmer’s formal address to the House of Commons this Monday.
The outcome could determine whether the Prime Minister can maintain his “grip” ahead of the May 7 local elections.
