Ukraine Missile Aid Unchanged After Starmer-Biden Discussion
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has met with US President Joe Biden in Washington to discuss various issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
However, no new pledges were made regarding the use of long-range missiles by Ukraine to hit targets inside Russia.
Sir Keir stated that they had a “long and productive discussion” on several fronts, including Ukraine, but did not provide further details.
The White House expressed “deep concern” about Iran and North Korea’s provision of lethal weapons to Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had warned Western nations not to allow Ukraine to fire long-range missiles at Russia, stating it would represent NATO’s “direct participation” in the war.
However, former US special representative for Ukraine negotiations Kurt Volker believes Putin’s comments are meant to deter further Western action.
The US and UK have not given Ukraine permission to use long-range missiles against targets inside Russia, fearing escalation.

The situation in Ukraine remains dire, with daily bombardments from Russia.
Kyiv argues that not being allowed to hit the bases from which these attacks are launched hinders its self-defense capability.
The UK has provided Ukraine with weapons for self-defense, but excludes the use of long-range Storm Shadow missiles in territory outside Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders.
The US has also provided long-range missiles, but with similar restrictions.
Sir Keir stated that the quickest way to resolve the war lies through Putin’s actions, and that the White House meeting was an opportunity to discuss strategy in relation to Ukraine.
The pair also discussed the situation in the Middle East and other global issues.
