The Lagos State Government has explained that the closure of the popular Agege Abattoir Market was due to unsafe and unhygienic practices observed among traders, including people sleeping within the abattoir premises alongside animals.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the action was taken on Thursday following an inspection by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who shared details of the visit on his official X (formerly Twitter) page.

In an accompanying video, Wahab stated:
“It’s not going to work. The government sent me here, and I’ve delivered the message. I am closing it down until things are done the right way.
People cannot be sleeping in an animal field. Let’s try to do something right. When we shut it down, somebody will sit down and think.”
The Agege abattoir is the latest in a series of markets shut down by the government for environmental violations. On April 11, the Lagos State Government sealed 13 markets in the Ketu and Mile 12 areas for continuous disregard of waste management regulations.

According to Wahab, these closures are in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, targeting illegal waste disposal and other infractions that compromise public health and environmental standards.
