EKO HOT BLOG reports that speaking in the Oval Office alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Trump said he had received “positive messages” regarding the possibility of ending the war but cautioned that optimism alone was not enough.
“This is a very serious situation,” he emphasized, while declining to specify which officials were part of the delegation heading to Moscow.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later revealed that National Security Secretary Mike Waltz had engaged in talks with his Russian counterpart. Additionally, a source told the BBC that Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff was expected to visit Moscow for further negotiations.
The Kremlin has acknowledged the ceasefire proposal and stated that discussions would continue “via various channels” over the next several days. Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to formally respond, though he was recently seen in the country’s Kursk region, an area that has seen intense fighting since Ukrainian forces crossed the border last year.
The Jeddah meeting between US and Ukrainian officials marked a turning point, as it led to the resumption of US military assistance to Kyiv. Relations had soured after a heated exchange between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and US Vice President JD Vance on February 28, which temporarily halted American support.
However, following the latest negotiations, Trump suggested that Ukraine’s leadership now desires peace.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, fighting continues across Ukraine. Russian missiles and drone strikes targeted several cities, including Kryvyy Rih, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv, overnight.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian military chief Oleksandr Syrsky confirmed that some Ukrainian troops were retreating from Kursk, prioritizing soldier safety in the face of Russian advances.
Trump has hinted at financial measures to pressure Russia into accepting the ceasefire. “I can do things financially that would be very bad for Russia,” he warned, though he stressed that his primary goal remains securing peace.
While ceasefire negotiations continue, President Putin has reportedly ordered his military to “fully liberate” Kursk, raising concerns that hostilities may persist despite diplomatic efforts.
