Job Title: Senior Engineering Manager – Ubuntu
Location: Remote
Job Summary
Canonical is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for core components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, networking, and storage configuration. This role requires a highly technical and problem-solving mindset, operating at the heart of Linux server systems.
As an Engineering Manager on the Foundations Team, you will drive Ubuntu’s growth at the intersection of open-source communities and enterprise technologies. Your leadership will be key in shaping Ubuntu’s future by mentoring a team of engineers and ensuring technical excellence in software development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and expand a distributed team of engineers.
- Provide hands-on leadership while upholding strong engineering principles.
- Oversee planning, estimation, and execution of development tasks.
- Collaborate with product management to define Ubuntu’s vision and strategy.
- Work cross-functionally with leadership teams to align product architecture and roadmaps.
- Advocate for and implement modern software development best practices.
- Foster a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with Canonical’s values.
- Participate in company-wide sprints, held twice a year for 1–2 weeks.
Requirements
- Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm).
- Proven track record of leading and managing software engineering teams.
- Deep knowledge of Linux system architecture, boot processes, and toolchains (Java/GCC/Python/Rust/Go).
- Experience with ARM and/or RISC-V architectures.
- Strong engagement with open-source communities and processes.
