In a statement, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Sa’id Suwaiba Ahmad, affirmed that no subject has been restricted or removed from the approved curriculum. They stressed that students are free to choose any subject, provided their selections are properly guided by parents, school authorities, or certified counsellors.
According to the ministers, the curriculum remains flexible and student-centred, allowing those in science classes to pick subjects from the arts or social sciences, and vice versa. They explained that the revised structure was deliberately designed to support diverse academic interests and career aspirations.
The ministry also addressed the confusion surrounding the former subject “Information and Communication Technology.” It confirmed that the subject has simply been renamed Digital Technology, adding that only the name changed while the curriculum content remains intact. Students who previously studied ICT are fully eligible to register for Digital Technology in upcoming examinations.
On trade subjects, the ministry said six trade options have been approved under the curriculum. Students may register for any of them as long as the subjects are offered in their schools and they have received appropriate instruction. It added that there is no requirement for students who were not taught any of the six trade subjects to register for a trade subject as their third elective.

The ministry reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and inclusive implementation of the revised curriculum nationwide. It urged parents, counsellors, school owners and examination bodies to rely strictly on verified information as the WAEC registration period continues.
According to the ministry, efforts will be sustained to ensure accurate, well-coordinated and seamless registration processes across the country.
