Prof. Obafunwa, at a press conference session in the institution’s conference room, revealed that the Eko Distribution Company has been unprofessional and disrespectful in their dealings with NIMR on Monday, January 27, 2025.
When a question about whether NIMR is under threat from Eko Electricity Distribution Company, Prof. Obafunwa affirmed the claim.
“Yes!, not just verbally but also in writing from Eko Electricity Distribution Company.” He said
Furthermore, he detailed the poor courtesy and ethical standards in Eko Electricity Distribution Company’s approach and dealings with NIMR.
“They’d send in a bill today, and I’m being told, if you don’t pay by a certain date, I will disconnect you… They had such bold and arrogant utterances.”
In addition, he cleared the air regarding what might have prompted such courtesy from Eko Electricity Distribution towards the Institute.
“Is NIMR owing Eko Electricity Distribution Company? I’d say yes, … as at the time I came in, my predecessor had a backlog of 39 to 39 million, but I can tell you that all the subsequent bills of 48 to 49 million have been settled.

Our foreign partners came to our aid to settle concurrent bills, but why will Eko Electricity Distribution Company keep sending us bills without meters?”
Also, he questioned a perceived levity and disregard in the manner in which the issue is being handled by the Lagos DISCO company.
“A letter dated 10th of December (2024) came in about a week ago; the time the letter came (was delivered) was at 7pm.”
“Anyways, we can handle that; we will see to that!” He concluded.
EKOHOTBLOG recalled that in an exclusive media chat, the NIMR D.G., Prof. Obafunwa, remarked that Eko Electricity Distribution Company has turned down their request for prepaid meters on several occasions.
Prof. Obafunwa stressed that despite the fact that the institution’s residential community has been economical and sensitive to the cost of electricity by practicing several power-saving initiatives, power charges are still skyrocketing, which prompted the demand for prepaid meters.
