Luckily, no one was hurt and North Korea did not shoot back. The soldiers quickly returned to their side after South Korea gave warnings and fired shots.
The crossing happened at the eastern part of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) around 5 p.m. Some of the North Korean soldiers were armed.
Similar incidents happened last June, but they also did not lead to major conflict.
It’s still unclear why the soldiers crossed the border. South Korea says North Korea has been working on its border defenses, like fixing fences.
Last October, North Korea said it would build more defense structures to protect against what it called threats from South Korea and the U.S. It may also be trying to stop people from escaping to South Korea.
The DMZ is a heavily guarded area between North and South Korea. It stretches 248 kilometers (155 miles) and is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) wide. It has many landmines and soldiers on both sides.
Tensions between the two countries are still high. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un continues to show off his nuclear weapons. He is also getting closer to Russia and ignoring efforts by the U.S. and South Korea to talk about peace.
At the same time, South Korea is dealing with political problems after President Yoon Suk Yeol was removed from office last week. His strong military partnership with the U.S. had upset North Korea.
Even so, U.S. President Donald Trump says he’s open to talking with Kim again to restart diplomacy. But North Korea hasn’t responded and says U.S. actions have only made things worse.
Some experts think Kim might talk to Trump again, hoping to use his nuclear weapons as a bargaining tool to get better deals from the U.S.
This border incident shows how unstable the Korean Peninsula still is. Even though both countries are showing restraint, the situation is risky.
