Wike, Allies Snub Rivers Judicial Inquiry on Arson, Violence Allegations

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declined to appear before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry established by the Rivers State Government to probe arson, killings, and the destruction of property in several local government headquarters.

The seven-member panel, led by Justice Ibiwengi Minakiri, was inaugurated by Governor Siminalayi Fubara in early October and given one month to complete its investigation. Wike was summoned via courier and a newspaper advert to appear before the commission on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

Speaking at the conclusion of the panel’s proceedings on Tuesday, Justice Minakiri confirmed that Wike did not respond to the summons. She noted that the day’s sitting was reserved solely for the former Rivers State governor to address certain critical issues.

“Today’s sitting was specifically for the former Governor of Rivers State to clarify some points we needed to understand,” Minakiri stated. “We had hoped he would be present, but since he isn’t, this marks the conclusion of our sittings unless instructed otherwise by His Excellency under the relevant laws guiding this commission.”

Minakiri also expressed disappointment that other key figures, including the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, failed to appear or send legal representation. She noted that public notices had been issued to ensure their awareness of the proceedings.

“Looking around, it is clear there are no unfamiliar faces here. Despite our efforts to summon specific individuals, including His Excellency Nyesom Wike, there has been no compliance. This concludes our sitting,” the panel chair remarked.

Despite the absence of Wike and others, Minakiri affirmed that the panel would proceed with submitting its findings. She expressed gratitude to those who participated, emphasizing that the final report aims to serve the best interests of Rivers State and its residents.

Meanwhile, it was observed that other notable figures summoned by the commission—such as former local government chairmen from Ikwerre, Obio/Akpor, Ahoada West, and Eleme—were also absent on November 18, 2024, without representation.
