The Yoruba Obas Forum (YOF), a traditional organization representing Yoruba monarchs, recently concluded a tour across Lagos State aimed at rebuilding trust and unity among Yoruba traditional rulers.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the tour, which began at Aladeshoyin’s palace and concluded at Ojora’s palace, focused on addressing past grievances, fostering stronger relationships, and charting a progressive future for the Yoruba traditional institution.
Speaking at the gathering, the forum’s president, Oba Dr Samuel Adeoye, Edema 1, the Molokun of Atijere Kingdom in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, reflected on the need to restore the harmony that once united Yoruba monarchs.
“Our friendship, which was the foundation of our strength, was broken by misunderstandings in the past. It is time to come together again and rebuild that bond,” he said.
The Public Relations Officer, HRM Oba Ganiyu Asunmo Aderibigbe, outlined the forum’s goals, emphasizing the importance of unity and mutual respect among all Yoruba-speaking obas.
“Our mission is clear: to unite all obas in Yoruba-speaking states and protect the dignity of our institution. This does not involve other chiefs but focuses on the obas themselves,” he explained.
One key issue discussed was the growing practice of unauthorized individuals parading as obas.
“No one should parade themselves as an oba without proper authorization. It undermines the sanctity of our institution and confuses the people,” Oba Adeoye stated.
The tour also stressed the importance of resolving disputes within the traditional council without external interference.
Leaders commended the Aladeshonyin of Odo Noforija for his efforts in mediating conflicts among monarchs.
“We must appreciate Aladeshoyin for his wisdom and dedication to resolving disputes peacefully. His contributions have strengthened our institution,” the PRO noted.
The forum clarified that their activities are not politically motivated, emphasizing their commitment to preserving Yoruba tradition independent of political affiliations.
“We do not align ourselves with any political agenda, and we are not planning to do that. That is why we contribute funds among ourselves for any occasion or activity,” Oba Adeoye affirmed.
The obas visited several key palaces during the tour, including Aladeshanyin’s Palace Noforija,Oba Babatunde Ogunlaja, Odo Ayandelu’s Palace Odo Ayandelu,Oba Asunmo Ganiyu Aderibigbe ,Ayangburin’s palace Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, Ranodu’s palace Imota,Oba Ajibade Mudashiru Agoro and Ojora’s palace Ijora Oba Abdulfatai Oyeyinka Aremu Ojora.
Each stop facilitated open dialogue, reflection, and a renewed commitment to unity and collaboration.
At every palace, the obas were warmly received, and discussions focused on mutual respect and the collective progress of the Yoruba traditional system.
“When obas are united, our communities progress. This tour is a message of hope to our people,” one of the monarchs remarked.
The forum concluded the tour with a renewed pledge to work together in protecting the dignity of their institution.
“Our efforts reflect the Yoruba saying, Àgbàjo owó la fí ǹ sọ̀ yà (Togetherness brings success). We believe this initiative will create a foundation for lasting unity and progress, reinforcing our role in preserving culture, tradition, and peace,” the obas said.
