The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), John Obafunwa, has described the installation of a 100KVA solar power system at the institute as a major boost to biomedical and public health research in Nigeria.
Eko Hot Blog reports that during the commissioning of the solar project donated by Excellence in Community Education, Welfare and Skills (ECEWS), Obafunwa said the initiative would significantly strengthen laboratory operations and improve the efficiency of research activities at the institute.

According to him, uninterrupted power supply remains essential for healthcare delivery and scientific research, especially for institutions such as NIMR whose operations depend heavily on laboratories, data systems and other critical infrastructure.
He noted that the deployment of renewable energy solutions aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the nation’s healthcare system while promoting environmentally sustainable practices.
Obafunwa commended ECEWS for what he described as its continued support for Nigeria’s health sector through community development, health system strengthening and capacity building initiatives.
He also appreciated the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for sustaining policies and partnerships aimed at advancing healthcare research and innovation in the country.

The NIMR DG stressed that investments in renewable energy within health and research institutions go beyond infrastructure development, adding that such projects improve efficiency, reduce operational costs and enhance service delivery.
He explained that the newly commissioned 100KVA solar solution would help reduce operational disruptions caused by unstable electricity supply, lower energy costs and support Nigeria’s climate action goals.
Obafunwa further stated that the solar project would ensure that critical research activities at the institute continue seamlessly without interruptions.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry and relevant stakeholders to promoting innovations that improve the functionality and productivity of health institutions across Nigeria.
