Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, kicked off the celebration with a Road Walk on Wednesday, followed by the Lagos Agric Scholars Quiz Competition scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium, and the grand finale on October 16 at the Police College Parade Ground, Ikeja.

Ms. Olusanya said the road walk aimed to create awareness and sensitize residents about the agricultural potential of Lagos, urging greater participation from citizens in developing the sector.
“People don’t see Lagos as an agrarian state, but under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos has been very efficient in agriculture. We want people to know that Lagos is an agrarian state, though in a different form and manner,” she said.
She also encouraged youth participation in agriculture and appreciated stakeholders who have contributed to ensuring food security in the state.
Speaking at a press briefing, Olusanya noted that World Food Day serves as a reminder of the need for collective action against hunger and malnutrition.
She stated that this year’s theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” highlights the importance of partnerships among governments, the private sector, development organisations, and communities to transform food systems and promote healthy diets.
Olusanya added that since 2021, when the Sanwo-Olu administration launched the five-year Agricultural and Food Systems Roadmap targeting 40% food self-sufficiency by 2025, Lagos has implemented several transformative programmes to boost food production, reduce post-harvest losses, and empower farmers.
Some key interventions include the Food Systems Transformation Agenda, Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub, Mid-Level Agroproduce Hubs, Eko Agro Mechanization Programme (EKO AGROMECS), Produce for Lagos Programme, and the Lagos Agripreneurship Programme (LAP).
She acknowledged challenges such as irregular rainfall and climate change, which have contributed to fluctuating food prices, but assured residents that the state government remains proactive in addressing these issues.

In his remarks, Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola, Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Agriculture and Food Systems, revealed that Lagos is currently cultivating rice and partnering with key stakeholders to enhance production and ensure food sufficiency across the state.
