EKO HOT BLOG reports that the suspects, identified as 40-year-old Abdullahi Balarabe and his 18-year-old wife, Shafaatu Abdullahi, were apprehended at a security checkpoint in Saminaka, Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the spokesperson for JTF OPEP, Major Samson Zhakom, confirmed that the arrest followed actionable intelligence from an intelligence agency in Plateau State. The coordinated operation, carried out in collaboration with troops of Sector 1 Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY), led to the recovery of 1,207 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition concealed in their vehicle.
“The suspects were intercepted at a snap checkpoint jointly manned by troops of JTF OPEP and OPFY at the outskirts of Saminaka,” Zhakom said. “The ammunition was believed to be destined for armed groups in the North West region.”
He added that both suspects, along with the recovered ammunition, are currently in custody for further investigation, with efforts underway to uncover their wider gunrunning network.
The General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander JTF OPEP, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, commended the troops for their vigilance and professionalism, describing the operation as a significant boost to the ongoing fight against terrorism and arms trafficking.
“This successful operation underscores the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling insecurity,” Oyinlola stated. He assured residents that JTF OPEP remains resolute in its mission to restore peace and eliminate criminal elements threatening the safety of citizens.
