EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board announced that Ahmedabad, located in the western state of Gujarat, will host the centenary edition of the Games. The decision will be ratified at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.
This will mark the Games’ return to India for the first time since Delhi 2010. Ahmedabad’s selection was largely influenced by its world-class infrastructure, particularly the Narendra Modi Stadium — the largest sports arena in the world with a 132,000 capacity. The city, home to over five million residents, has become a hub for major international sporting events and is viewed as a future Olympic contender.
Reacting to the announcement, the President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, Dr. P. T. Usha, described it as a “powerful opportunity to inspire the youth and strengthen global partnerships.”
Nigeria’s loss extends Africa’s long wait to host the Commonwealth Games, despite mounting calls for the continent to be given a chance after a century of the competition. Abuja had also failed in its previous attempt to host the 2014 edition.
Nigeria’s bid had strong political backing from President Bola Tinubu and was presented by a high-level delegation in London. Both Abuja and Ahmedabad were the only cities to meet the August 31 submission deadline.

Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare commended both nations for their passion, saying their bids reflected the Games’ continued global appeal. He added that Nigeria’s hosting ambition remains alive, as the board plans to support a potential bid for the 2034 edition.
