- France, EU and EIB Back Lagos’ Omi Eko Project to Transform Ferry Transport and Waterways

The French Development Agency (AFD), European Union (EU), and European Investment Bank (EIB) have pledged major support to the Lagos State Government for the Omi Eko Project an ambitious plan to revolutionise water transport across Africa’s largest city.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the project aims to deliver a structured, efficient, and affordable ferry transport system, enhancing connectivity and improving daily mobility for millions of Lagos residents.

Implemented by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the Omi Eko initiative is being supported both technically and financially by a consortium of European partners. The AFD is providing a €130 million loan, while the EIB contributes a €170 million loan, complemented by a €60 million grant from the EU.
Speaking at the launch, Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, said:
“Through Omi Eko, Nigeria with the support of France and the EU is leading the way in putting innovative and sustainable mobility at the service of people’s needs, at the heart of Lagos.”
Gautier Mignot, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, added:

“Nigeria and Lagos are spearheading the execution of Global Gateway projects, showcasing how international partnerships can deliver tangible impact.”
Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable growth, innovation, and climate resilience as the state prepares to host the 2025 International Climate Change Summit.
In a statement signed by Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the governor noted that Lagos continues to demonstrate leadership in subnational climate action through initiatives such as blue bonds and nature-based coastal protection projects key drivers of Africa’s next decade of sustainable urban development.
