Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize by the Millennium Excellence Award USA.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the award was announced in a letter delivered by the Board of Directors of the Millennium Excellence Foundation (MEF), which said Sanwo-Olu was selected following a rigorous assessment of his achievements and the development of Lagos State under his administration.

According to the foundation, the board unanimously approved Sanwo-Olu for one of its prestigious honours in recognition of his contribution to transformation and good governance.
The award is being presented under the royal patronage of the Asantehene of Kumasi, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who will personally confer the honour on Sanwo-Olu alongside Her Royal Highness Lady Julia, Queen Consort.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, August 29, 2026, with the red carpet beginning at 2:30 p.m.
The Millennium Excellence Awards USA recognises individuals of African heritage and global contributors who have made significant contributions to areas including public service, business, science, arts and philanthropy.
At the event, Sanwo-Olu is expected to deliver a keynote address on positioning Lagos, described as Africa’s largest sub-national economy, to attract investment from diaspora communities.
His address will focus on opportunities in urban infrastructure, finance and other investment-ready projects across the state.
The governor is also expected to participate in government sessions, plenaries and roundtable discussions aimed at strengthening economic and social ties between Lagos and diaspora communities.
Previous recipients of the Millennium Excellence Awards include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Mo Ibrahim, Wole Soyinka, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.
