EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Constitutional Council announced on Monday that Biya, aged 92, won with 53.66 percent of the votes, defeating his main challenger, Issa Tchiroma, who polled 35.19 percent. The election, held on October 12, had faced weeks of tension and accusations of irregularities before the final confirmation of results.
Tchiroma, who has been one of Biya’s strongest opponents for years, rejected the official results, insisting he won the poll with 54.8 percent of the votes. He accused the government of manipulating the process and urged his supporters to engage in peaceful demonstrations.
However, authorities banned public gatherings ahead of the announcement, leading to clashes between protesters and security forces in Douala, the country’s commercial hub.
Littoral Regional Governor, Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua, confirmed that four people were killed in the unrest, while several security officers were injured. “Four people unfortunately lost their lives after protesters attacked a gendarmerie brigade and two police stations,” he said.
With this victory, Biya will now continue into his eighth term, cementing his status as one of Africa’s longest-ruling leaders. Biya first assumed office in 1982, following the resignation of Cameroon’s first president, Ahmadou Ahidjo.

Despite growing discontent over economic stagnation, corruption, and separatist conflict in the country’s English-speaking regions, Biya continues to wield strong control over state institutions and the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM).
