Tension erupted on Sunday evening along Onitsha Road, Anambra State, after soldiers allegedly opened fire on police officers returning from election duty. The confrontation reportedly occurred at a military checkpoint and led to chaos in the area.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to eyewitnesses, the disagreement started when policemen, who were part of the security deployment for the November 8, 2025, governorship election, encountered soldiers at the checkpoint. An argument reportedly broke out between the two security agencies before the soldiers opened fire.
One of the policemen involved told reporters that the situation escalated without warning. “On our way back from Anambra State election, we had a misunderstanding with Army personnel at a military checkpoint. Before we knew what was going on, they opened fire on us,” he said.
He added that one officer was shot in the chest, while several others sustained injuries. “One of us was shot directly on his chest, with many other policemen injured. The issue has generated into a riot as we are talking. We have also called for backup,” the officer added.
The incident occurred barely hours after the conclusion of the governorship election, which saw heavy deployment of security personnel across Anambra State. Reports indicated that about 45,000 police officers were deployed to maintain order during the exercise.
