The move has been widely criticised by several state governors as “cruel and purposefully inflammatory.”
In a post on X, the DC Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers had cordoned off the area and warned the public to stay away as investigations continued.
Although officials have not released confirmed casualty figures, law enforcement sources told the Associated Press that two National Guard members were shot.
Another source, however, told the New York Times that only one Guard member had been injured. How the shooting started or the identity of the attacker remains unclear as of press time.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration was “aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation,” adding that President Trump had been fully briefed.
The National Guard has maintained a months-long presence in Washington, D.C., as part of Trump’s anti-crime campaign. The shooting has now added fresh scrutiny to the deployment strategy and heightened concerns over the safety of security personnel stationed throughout the city.
