Eko Hot Blog reports that the plane, en route from Baku to Grozny in Russia, was diverted to Aktau due to fog but caught fire during an emergency landing approximately 3km (1.9 miles) from the city.

Eyewitness footage showed the aircraft descending rapidly with its landing gear down before bursting into flames upon impact.

Flight data indicated that the aircraft departed Baku at 03:55 GMT and crashed around 06:28. Unconfirmed reports from Russian media suggested a possible collision with a flock of birds before the crash.

The plane’s black box has been recovered, and authorities have launched an investigation into the cause.

The flight had primarily Azerbaijani nationals on board, along with passengers from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

Among the victims was a woman traveling to spend the holidays with her children in Chechnya. Others remain missing, including a mother with her sick child’s medical tests.
