The Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN) has ordered the closure of all magistrate courts in Cross River State, effective Monday, December 9, 2024.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the directive was issued in a notice on Sunday by the association’s state chairman, Godwin Onah, and secretary, Solomon Abuo. They stated that magistrates across the state are commencing an indefinite strike.

The notice mandates full compliance, urging magistrates to halt all official duties, including court sittings, starting from the stated date.

“This is Bulletin No. 2, and all magistrates are to abstain from performing official duties, including court sittings, from Monday, December 9, 2024, until further notice,” the notice emphasized.

The strike follows an earlier communiqué issued on November 5, 2024, during a general meeting where eight demands were presented to the Cross River State Government.

The association highlighted that a letter dated November 11, 2024, had been sent to the state governor, extending the strike notice to November 22, 2024, to allow time for the government to address their demands.

“Furthermore, Bulletin No. 1 dated November 27, 2024, announced a warning strike from November 27 to November 29, 2024. Despite this, the Cross River State Government has neither addressed our demands as outlined in the communiqué of November 5, 2024, nor initiated negotiations with us,” the statement read.

In response to the government’s inaction, the association declared: “We are now embarking on an indefinite strike until our demands are met.”
