Major stakeholders from the old Ijebu Province have decided to create a harmonization committee to resolve disagreements as they work towards forming a new state.
This decision was made during a meeting on Friday at the palace of the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi. The committee includes seven members from both the Remo and Ijebu zones.

The meeting follows an earlier one held in December 2024 at the palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. Stakeholders agreed that it was time to create a new state from the colonial Ijebu Province.
Former Governor and Senator for Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, urged the leaders to avoid unnecessary conflicts that had hindered past efforts. He acknowledged that creating a state under the Nigerian Constitution is challenging but possible with unity and determination. In December, a bill sponsored by Senator Daniel for the creation of the new state passed its first reading, starting the process.
However, there have been debates about the name and capital of the proposed state. Some Remo youths feel the current proposal favors Ijebu history and interests over Remo’s. The harmonization committee was set up to address these concerns and present a unified position to move the process forward.
The Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Ajayi, called for unity, emphasizing that Ijebu and Remo have more in common than differences. He urged stakeholders to focus on the shared goal of creating the new state without letting disagreements harm their relationship.
At the end of the meeting, the Baamofin of Remoland, Barrister Bayo Onafuwa, confirmed the formation of the committee, which will report back to the traditional rulers within a month.

The communique stated that the committee’s responsibilities include deciding on the state’s name, capital, and local government areas, among other issues.
