The order also mandates a review of U.S. funding to the UN and its agencies, citing concerns over financial disparities and alleged anti-American bias.
The decision, announced on Tuesday, reinforces Trump’s long-standing criticism of multilateral organizations.
White House Staff Secretary Will Scharf defended the move, stating, “The UN is plagued with anti-American bias, and it’s time we reassess our role and financial commitment.”

End of U.S. Role in UNHRC and UNRWA
The UN Human Rights Council, a 47-member body, monitors human rights abuses worldwide. T
he U.S. had already lost its voting seat after its latest term ended on December 31, retaining only observer status. Trump’s executive order now ends all U.S. involvement, halting participation in global human rights reviews and investigations.
The administration also withdrew from UNRWA, the primary humanitarian agency for Palestinian refugees.

The decision aligns with Israel’s stance against the agency, accusing it of spreading anti-Israel content.
Trump echoed these concerns, arguing that U.S. funding for UNRWA was disproportionate and should be reassessed.
Financial Review of UN Contributions
Trump has long criticized the UN’s financial structure, arguing that the U.S. shoulders an unfair burden. His latest executive order calls for a full review of American contributions to the UN, with a focus on redistributing funding responsibilities among member states.

“The UN has tremendous potential, but it is not being well managed,” Trump stated. “It should be funded by everyone, not just us.”
The review also extends to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), an agency the U.S. has previously withdrawn from over alleged political bias.
A Pattern of Global Withdrawals
This move is part of a broader effort by Trump to reduce U.S. involvement in international organizations.
In his previous term, he withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement and initiated the country’s exit from the World Health Organization (WHO).
