- Lawmakers dismiss rumors of her removal as false.
- President Tinubu’s intervention helped restore stability.
Calm has returned to the Lagos State House of Assembly as newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, continues to gain the support of lawmakers despite earlier tensions.
On January 13, 2025, Meranda was elected as Speaker after 37 out of 40 Assembly members voted to impeach former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of financial misappropriation and abuse of office.

The dramatic leadership change sparked controversy within political circles, drawing criticism from both state and national stakeholders.
However, the political crisis appeared to ease following a phone call from President Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His intervention reportedly helped stabilize the situation, allowing Meranda to consolidate her leadership.
Despite rumors of another leadership tussle, lawmakers have dismissed any claims of Meranda’s removal as baseless. Insiders within the Assembly insist that the atmosphere remains peaceful, with all members fully engaged in their duties.

“The Assembly is peaceful, and everyone is working here. The lawmakers are happy. Nobody is causing any problem,” a source within the Assembly stated.
On Thursday, after a routine plenary session, the House adjourned its sitting to Monday, February 10, at 11 a.m. During the session, lawmakers praised the administration of President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for their economic policies aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.

Meranda’s leadership has also been strengthened by her growing collaboration with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The Speaker and the Governor were reportedly seen together at the Lagos Television (LTV 8) station on Friday morning, further dispelling speculations of unrest within the Assembly.
As political observers continue to monitor developments in the Lagos Assembly, it appears that Meranda is successfully steering the House toward stability, effectively quelling any lingering doubts about her leadership.
