Eko Hot Blog reports that the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has raised concerns over an imminent network blackout in Lagos and Ogun States due to a diesel supply crisis caused by the ongoing strike by the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), a branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).\

ATCON President, Tony Emoekpere, warned that the strike, triggered by alleged police harassment of tanker drivers in Lagos, has disrupted fuel distribution, leaving telecom base stations critically low on diesel. He stressed that if urgent action is not taken, millions of mobile and internet users could experience severe disruptions.
“The strike has halted truck loading operations and fuel movement, severely impacting diesel supply to telecom infrastructure,” Emoekpere stated. “Critical sites are running dangerously low on fuel, and without immediate intervention, a network collapse is imminent.”

The potential blackout could disrupt mobile and internet services, business operations, emergency response systems, and essential communications.
ATCON is calling on the Governors of Lagos and Ogun States to intervene urgently by facilitating the release of diesel from depots to telecom operators.

“This is not just a telecom issue, it is a national emergency that could cripple economic activities and compromise public safety,” Emoekpere emphasized.
The association also urged security agencies and petroleum unions to resolve the crisis swiftly to prevent widespread connectivity issues that could impact Nigeria’s economy and public welfare.
