The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the institution has condemned the incident, attributing it to the university’s weak security measures. The union is calling for the immediate and safe return of the victims.
A student, speaking anonymously, identified the kidnapped students as Emmanuella, Fola, Susan, and Ella, all residents of Zamfara Hostel. The attack occurred around 8:30 p.m. as the students were heading to a lecture hall to study.
“They were ambushed by five armed men who ordered them to follow. In panic, they tried to flee into the bush, screaming for help, but the kidnappers threatened to shoot if they did not comply. Fearing for their lives, they surrendered and were taken away,” the student recounted.
News of the abduction sparked outrage on campus, with students protesting and demanding answers from the university administration. Many expressed concern over their safety, particularly at night when students typically study in lecture halls.
At the time of this report, the university had yet to release an official statement. However, police spokesperson Catherine Anene confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation was underway.
ASUU Demands Action
In a statement, ASUU Chairman Paul Anyagh condemned the kidnapping, citing previous security breaches, including the abduction of a university staff member.
“This incident is one too many. If students are not safe, how can academic activities continue smoothly? We urge the university and security agencies to ensure the immediate rescue of the students and improve campus security,” Anyagh stated.
ASUU called for urgent measures to protect both students and staff, emphasizing the need for a secure learning environment. The union assured its members of its commitment to their safety while urging calm as efforts continue to secure the release of the kidnapped students.
