Protesters lined a road in Vermont where Vice-President JD Vance was expected to travel, following his heated exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

The backlash came a day after Vance and President Donald Trump clashed with Zelensky in the Oval Office. During the tense meeting, Vance accused the Ukrainian leader of disrespecting the US, while Trump urged Zelensky to strike a deal with Russia, warning, “or we are out,” and accusing him of “gambling with World War Three.”
The Vermont demonstration was organised earlier in the week as a protest against the Trump-Vance administration, but many participants carried signs referencing the White House confrontation and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“I think [Friday’s] performance at the White House has probably galvanized even more people to come out today,” said Judy Daly of Indivisible Mad River Valley, the group behind the protest.
In addition to the Vermont demonstration, pro-Ukraine rallies were held in New York, Los Angeles, and Boston on Saturday. Meanwhile, a group of counter-protesters supporting Trump and Vance also gathered in Waitsfield.
Vermont Governor Phil Scott, a Republican who has distanced himself from Trump, urged residents to be respectful toward Vance and his family.
