EKO HOT BLOG reports that the crisis revolves around leadership tussles, the position of the National Secretary, and conflicting meeting schedules between rival factions.
Two opposing camps, one led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the other by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have emerged, each insisting on different leadership directions. The Makinde camp, which includes governors from Enugu, Bayelsa, Osun, Zamfara, and 11 National Working Committee (NWC) members, insists the NEC meeting must hold as planned, rejecting Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s return as National Secretary.
In contrast, Wike’s camp, supported by governors from Plateau, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, and top NWC officials including Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, is calling for the meeting’s postponement and pushing for Anyanwu’s reinstatement.
Acting National Chairman Damagum had earlier announced the NEC’s postponement and called for an Expanded National Caucus meeting instead, citing support from key stakeholders. However, 11 NWC members opposed this, insisting the NEC remains valid, as originally scheduled by the 99th NEC on May 27.
Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja, reaffirmed on Sunday night that the NEC meeting would proceed today as planned at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, stressing that no party organ has the authority to cancel or convert the meeting.
While Damagum’s faction maintains today’s gathering is a National Caucus meeting, the Makinde group insists it is the statutory NEC, which will decide critical party matters.

The deepening crisis highlights persistent leadership struggles within the PDP, raising concerns over unity ahead of the upcoming National Convention scheduled for August.
