President Donald Trump has announced fresh 30 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico and the European Union, intensifying his administration’s ongoing trade battles. The tariffs are set to take effect on August 1, 2025, according to letters the U.S. leader posted on Truth Social.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Trump accused Mexico of failing to do enough to curb the flow of illicit drugs into the U.S., despite acknowledging recent border cooperation. He also cited persistent trade imbalances with the EU as justification for the new levies.
“Mexico has been helping me secure the border, BUT, what Mexico has done is not enough,” Trump stated, confirming a 30% tariff will apply to Mexican exports. However, products traded under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will be exempt.
The new EU tariff also represents a sharp increase from the earlier 20 percent duty announced in April. Trump delayed a scheduled hike to 20 percent tariffs this week, extending the deadline to August 1 to allow ongoing negotiations with Brussels to continue.
European officials, who have been locked in talks with Washington, had earlier indicated willingness to strike a deal to avoid escalation. In response to earlier tariffs on steel and aluminum, the EU prepared retaliatory duties on U.S. goods worth €21 billion, now suspended until July 14.

This marks the latest in a series of tariff threats since Trump returned to office in January 2025. Despite securing trade deals with the UK and Vietnam and easing tensions with China, other key trading partners remain unsettled.
