According to police authorities, the new unit will function as an intelligence-driven strike force, designed to improve rapid response and coordination among commands across the country.
A senior police official described the move as part of broader reforms to reposition the Nigeria Police Force for greater efficiency and professionalism.
“The unit is designed to serve as a specialised and rapid response force against violent crime nationwide,” the official said.
As part of the restructuring, existing non-specialised tactical teams at the state level are to be disbanded and integrated into the new unit.
In preparation for the rollout, selected commanders have been invited to Abuja for operational briefings, while in Bayelsa State, CSP Chris Nwaogbo has already been appointed to head the unit.
The Inspector-General also approved the upgrade of police forensic laboratories and digital intelligence systems, including improvements to the national criminal database to enhance investigations.
Additionally, the Police Mobile Force is to be refocused strictly on riot control and violent crime response, with personnel withdrawn from non-core duties such as VIP escort services.
Disu warned officers assigned to the new unit to operate within the confines of the law, stressing the importance of professionalism and respect for human rights.

The move comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in parts of the country, with the police leadership seeking to restore public confidence and improve overall safety.
