President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that after leaving office, Buhari chose a quiet life and made no effort to influence government matters.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Tinubu made this remark during a special session of the Federal Executive Council held in Buhari’s honor at the State House in Abuja.

He acknowledged that although Buhari holds significant influence and respect, he refrained from trying to control or interfere in the nation’s affairs after his tenure.
“When his tenure ended, he returned to Daura — not to command from the shadows or to hold court, but to live as he always had,” Tinubu said. “He never sought to impose his will but was content to let others carry the nation forward.”
The tribute was part of a broader reflection on Muhammadu Buhari’s legacy as a military leader, former Head of State, and two-term civilian president. President Tinubu described him as a man of simple values who upheld discipline, modesty, and deep patriotism throughout more than five decades of public service.
Tinubu also reflected on their political partnership, which led to Buhari’s historic 2015 election and marked Nigeria’s first democratic transfer of power between political parties.
He noted that Buhari led the nation with dignity and restraint, remaining unaffected by public praise or political pressure.
The president extended condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians mourning the late leader. He also expressed gratitude to the Interministerial Committee, chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and Governor Dikko Radda, for organizing a state funeral within 48 hours.
President Buhari passed away earlier this week and was laid to rest in Daura on Tuesday, July 15, in a ceremony attended by senior government officials and dignitaries.

Tinubu, who led the official delegation to the funeral, concluded his tribute by describing Buhari as “a good man, a decent man, and an honourable man” whose moral force and public service would not be forgotten.
