Dr. Chido Nwangwu, founder of USAfricaLIVE and a prominent voice in the Nigerian-American diaspora, has issued a tribute following the death of esteemed attorney and civic leader, Larry Johnson.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Johnson passed away on Friday, July 18, during a trip to Mexico, where he was reported to have slipped in a bathroom and later died as a result of the fall.

In a statement shared with our correspondent, Dr. Nwangwu expressed deep sadness over the loss, describing Johnson as a friend, associate, and compatriot.

“I am saddened by the news of the death of our friend, associate, and compatriot, Attorney Larry Johnson,” Dr. Nwangwu wrote. “May the timeless grace of God bring all the people he left behind the benediction of divine peace and the redeemed spirit of Jehova Elohim.”
He described the late Attorney Johnson as someone widely respected for his involvement in several key civic and social organizations in Houston and beyond.
He said the deceased was known for his distinguished presence and impeccable sense of style, he was a familiar and trusted figure in both professional circles and community life.
Dr. Nwangwu noted that Larry Johnson built lasting friendships across the Nigerian community, describing him as “cosmopolitan like many of our people who identify with Lagos, whether by birth, migration, or strategic social alignment.”
He highlighted a group of respected Houston residents who embody those same qualities, including Otunba TJ Abbas, who personally informed him of Johnson’s passing along with attorney and scientist Dr. OJ Lawal, Dr. Olu Otubusin, the Adeniji-Adele family, attorney Patrick Chukelu, and several others.
Nwangwu also reflected on his shared affiliation with Eko Club International, an organization that captures the culture, spirit, and legacy of Lagos, a group in which Johnson was an active and valued member.
“I had the privilege of being admitted over 20 years ago into Eko Club International. Larry was an active and valued member of this prestigious group.” he said

As the community processes the news of Johnson’s passing, Dr. Nwangwu called for prayers and support for the family.
Funeral arrangements is expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
