Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has lauded the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army for its steadfast commitment to maintaining peace, security, and protection of lives and property across the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the commendation was delivered during the Combined 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) of the 81 Division, Nigerian Army Engineers, and 9 Brigade, held at the 9 Brigade Parade Ground, TA Lagbaja Cantonment, Ikeja.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Toyin Akinmade Ayinde, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the state government’s support for the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, particularly under Operation MESA, to enable them operate efficiently.
Describing WASA as a historic cultural tradition originating from the West African Frontier Force, the governor highlighted its role in fostering unity, camaraderie, and esprit de corps among troops and their families. He noted that the event provides a well-deserved opportunity for personnel to celebrate their achievements with loved ones after a year of training, operations, and internal security engagements.

Governor Sanwo-Olu further appreciated the Nigerian Army’s partnership in ensuring peace and security in Lagos, which has positively impacted economic growth. He also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support of the Armed Forces under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Earlier, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, described WASA as a cherished military tradition that strengthens discipline and unity among personnel.
He commended officers and soldiers for their dedication in 2025, highlighting successful training programs, hosting four major Army Headquarters-level events, and the Division’s swift deployment to support the Republic of Benin in line with the ECOWAS Protocol.
Major General Mijinyawa also thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for guidance and resource support.
The event was attended by senior military officers, heads of security agencies, captains of industry, and community leaders. Highlights included awards for outstanding soldiers, exhibitions of Nigerian culture and cuisine, traditional performances, a tug-of-war competition, the lowering of the national flag, and a bonfire marking the conclusion of the historic ceremony.
