Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso met privately with President Bola Tinubu on Monday at the president’s official residence.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the meeting came shortly after Kwankwaso attended the opening ceremony of the Nigeria Forest Economy Summit 2025, held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

This marks the second publicly known meeting between the two leaders in just over two years.
Their previous encounter at Aso Rock Villa occurred on June 9, 2023, a few days after Tinubu’s inauguration, during which Kwankwaso became the first presidential candidate to visit the newly sworn-in president.
At that time, while speaking with State House correspondents, Kwankwaso revealed they discussed issues related to politics and governance. He also hinted at the possibility of working with Tinubu but offered no specifics.
Although Monday’s meeting was not open to journalists, it comes just weeks after the opposition African Democratic Congress announced a broad coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, 67, is a seasoned northern political figure and the founder of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

He served two non-consecutive terms as Kano governor (1999 to 2003 and 2011 to 2015), held the position of Minister of Defence under President Olusegun Obasanjo, and contested the 2023 presidential election under the New Nigeria Peoples Party, finishing fourth but securing a strong win in Kano State.
The NNPP also captured the governorship and a majority in the state assembly, reinforcing Kwankwaso’s influence in Nigeria’s most populous northern state.
Though the NNPP is not officially part of the ADC-led coalition, many opposition figures are seeking Kwankwaso’s support as they attempt to unite various parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
Presidency officials approached for comment could not confirm what was discussed during the meeting. One source noted it was held at the president’s residence and was not accessible to most aides.
