EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement released on Friday, July 25, and jointly signed by the branch Chairperson, Dr. Abubakar Mshelia, and Assistant Secretary, Peter Teri, the union vowed to challenge the renaming in court. The resolution followed an emergency congress held on July 24, 2025, which included ASUU members, the Student Union Government, and key stakeholders.
The union condemned the decision as “a flagrant disregard for university autonomy and a direct affront to the collective heritage of the university community.” It argued that the University of Maiduguri, after five decades of existence, had built a distinguished legacy that should not be altered without broad consultation.
ASUU described the name change as “ill-conceived” and “devoid of meaningful engagement” with the university’s community, alumni, and the general public. It also labelled the move as an example of poor governance and political interference in education.
To counter the decision, the union disclosed that it had mandated its executive committee to pursue all legal options to preserve the university’s original identity. It further called on other ASUU branches, the national body, civil society organisations, students, and the National Assembly to resist any legislative backing for the renaming.

ASUU insists that university autonomy must be respected and protected from political manipulation, urging the Federal Government to reverse the renaming immediately.
